Tips for setting up a Mardave V12 - Tyres

The following are more general hints:

Although V54P’s all round will work, if you want the optimum setup there are a few more tyre choices. Ideally you want the front tyres to be slightly harder than the rear, this will give the car under steer, and stop the rear end snatching round. The recommended tyres for the front are UFRA pink medium or UFRA Jap mediums, and for the rear UFRA SE medium or UFRA pink soft. True the rears to approx 53-55mm and the fronts to about 50mm. You will need to let the front tyres wear in, and you’ll find the tyre will become coned i.e. smaller on the outside. You will be able to use these till there almost down to the rims. The rears are best replaced when they get to 48-49mm, any smaller and you will lose top end speed & grip.

Make sure the tyres are in good condition. If you have any chunks of foam missing it is obvious it will affect your handling, you will need to change them. You can try to stick the chunk back in, if you find it, with superglue but this will give you a hard spot on your tyre and again affect the handling.

There are several ways of mounting the tyres to the rims. 1) You can use super glue, it’s quick and simple but when the tyre wears down you get hard patches where the superglue has penetrated the foam. 2) You can use masking tape or surgical tape on the hub; smear UHU or similar glue the inside of the tyre position the tyre and let it dry over night. It’s best if you can wear disposable rubber gloves, as this method can be very messy. But when your tyres are completely shot you can remove the old tyre and the glue stays on the tape so you can re-use the hubs with your new tyres. Or 3) which seems to be the best, use the double-sided tape, which is available from Mardave. Stick the tape to the hub, peel off the backing & wet with warm soapy water, wet the inside of the tyre, slide the tyre onto the hub and make sure it’s running true. Then let it dry over night. Again when the tyre gets to the end of their life you can re-use the hubs.

Before you put your new tyres on the car fit the fronts to the rear axle, support the car off the bench/table and using the trim on your transmitter set the rear wheels spinning. Using a bit of sandpaper make sure the outside diameter is running true and round off the outside edge. Put these onto the front and do the same for the rears, but make sure both the rear tyres are the same diameter or your car won’t go in a straight line!
